The Black Mamba Tales are an alt-rock duo from Calgary, AB. Having previously worked with them, they came to me asking for some artwork for their new album, Beluga Droid. The prompt was simple: they wanted a robot beluga whale, and they wanted it weird. Everything else was up to me. I decided to enlist the help of a former colleague, Kelly Archibald. I showed them her work; they loved it and wanted to use her art as the album cover. I managed the art direction of the cover, and she did the illustration. We worked back and forth, refining her sketches, until we were finally both happy with the final piece. I then took her artwork into Adobe Illustrator to trace it as a vector graphic for upscaling purposes. I specifically traced each line to retain the hand-drawn feel it had. It was then finished off with some typography and color.
